Why It Matters

Your Cabinets Are Probably Better Than the Replacements

Most of the kitchens we refinish around South Surrey and White Rock are solid oak or maple, built when cabinetry was made from actual wood and put together to last. There is usually nothing wrong with them except the finish, which has simply dated. Tearing all of that out to replace it with particleboard and a printed veneer costs several times more. Refinishing keeps the quality material and transforms the appearance to something you enjoy looking at.

  • Sprayed, Not Brushed Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed on-site in a booth, and left to cure properly. No brush texture, no roller stipple, and no overspray drifting through your house.
  • The Prep Is Why It Lasts Kitchen doors carry years of cooking film that no amount of sanding fixes on its own. We degrease first, then sand, then prime. Skipping any of those steps is why a cheap cabinet job peels at the handles within a year.
  • A Working Kitchen, Sooner Than You Think Boxes are finished while the doors are in the booth, so the two happen at once rather than one after the other. Most kitchens are back in normal use inside a week.

What's Included

Everything a Cabinet Refinish Needs

One scope, one crew, one quote. Here is what that actually covers.

A large kitchen with an island, ready for cabinet refinishing

Assessment and Teardown

We start by checking what you actually have, because not every cabinet is worth refinishing and we will tell you honestly if yours is not. Solid wood and quality veneer take a sprayed finish beautifully. Once we are agreed, every door, drawer front and hinge comes off and gets numbered, so each one goes back exactly where it started rather than close enough.

  • Honest assessment of whether refinishing is the right call
  • Every door and hinge numbered before it comes off
  • Contents stay in the boxes, we work around them

Degrease, Sand and Prime

This is the part that decides whether the finish is still perfect in five years. Kitchen doors carry a film of cooking grease that sits in the grain and defeats paint no matter how well you sand. Everything gets degreased first, then sanded back to a key, then coated with a bonding primer made to grip an aged factory finish. Cabinets that peel at the handles were almost always skipped at this step.

  • Degreased before any sanding, not after
  • Sanded to a key rather than sanded through
  • Bonding primer made for aged factory finishes

Doors Sprayed On-Site

Doors and drawer fronts are sprayed flat, which is the only way to get a genuinely smooth face. Sprayed flat means the coating levels under gravity instead of running down a vertical door. Because we set up our spray booth right at your home, your doors never leave the property, so there’s no risk of them getting dinged, scratched or mixed up in transit to an outside shop. The booth also means no overspray anywhere in your house.

  • Sprayed flat so the finish levels properly
  • Never leave your property, so nothing’s damaged or lost in transit
  • Left to cure fully before anything is handled
  • No overspray drifting through the house

Framing Finished On Site

The frames and boxes stay where they are and get finished in place behind proper containment, with plastic sheeting, floor protection and extraction so dust and fumes stay in the kitchen. Face frames, end panels, gables and any exposed shelving get the same prep and the same product as the doors, so nothing gives away that the two were finished in different places.

  • Full containment, floor protection and extraction
  • Face frames, end panels and exposed gables included
  • Same product on the boxes as on the doors

Colour and Sheen

Cabinet colour is harder than wall colour because it has to live with a countertop, a backsplash and flooring you are not changing, and because a kitchen is lit by a mix of daylight and downlights that read very differently. We put samples up against your actual counter and look at them under both. Sheen matters as much as colour: too flat and it marks, too glossy and every fingerprint shows, so we recommend based on how the kitchen is actually used.

  • Samples against your counter and backsplash, not a showroom
  • Looked at under daylight and under your downlights
  • Sheen recommended for how the kitchen is used

Our Process

How a Cabinet Job Runs

  1. Estimate

We count the doors and drawer fronts, check what the cabinets are made of, and tell you honestly whether refinishing is the right call. You get a written scope with the door count, the products and the timeline on it, handed to you before we leave. Free, no obligation.

  2. Colour and Scheduling

Samples put up against your counter and backsplash, looked at under daylight and under your kitchen lights. Then dates, including exactly which days the doors will be off so you can plan around it.

  3. Teardown, Spray and Cure

Doors and hardware come off and are numbered. Everything is degreased, sanded and primed, then the doors are sprayed flat while the boxes are finished on site behind containment. Both cure properly before anything is handled.

  4. Reinstall and Approval

Doors go back exactly where they came from, hinges adjusted so everything sits level and closes cleanly. We walk it with you under your own lighting, sort anything you want tightened, and back it with a 3 year warranty in writing.

The Paint We Put Our Name Behind

We quote with named product lines, not two coats of paint. Cabinets take more abuse than any other painted surface in a house, so the product matters more here than anywhere else.

FAQ

Cabinet Painting Questions

Cabinets are priced by the number of doors and drawer fronts rather than by the size of the room, because that is what actually drives the labour. As a guide, from the kitchens we have refinished around South Surrey and White Rock, a typical kitchen runs $4000 to $7500. A smaller kitchen or a bathroom vanity sits below that, and a large kitchen with an island and a pantry above it. What moves the number is the door count, whether the boxes need work as well as the doors, how much grease and previous coating has to come off first, and whether you want new hardware or soft close hinges fitted while everything is apart. For comparison, replacing the same cabinetry usually runs several times the refinishing cost.

Less time than most people expect, because the doors and the boxes happen at the same time rather than one after the other. A typical kitchen is 4 to 7 working days from teardown to reinstall. You keep the use of your counters, sink and appliances throughout, and the cabinet contents stay where they are. The only real inconvenience is open shelving for a few days while the doors are in the booth being sprayed and cured.

Not if the preparation was done properly. Nearly every failed cabinet job we get called to fix failed for the same reason: the doors were not degreased before sanding, so the coating never truly bonded and it lets go at the handles and around the sink first. We degrease, sand and bond prime before any colour goes on, and the doors are sprayed and cured flat in a booth rather than hand painted in place. It is backed by our 3 year warranty in writing.

Sometimes, and we will tell you honestly which side of the line yours falls on. Solid wood and quality veneer refinish beautifully. Laminate and melamine can be done with the right bonding primer, though the result depends heavily on the condition of the existing surface. Thermofoil is the difficult one: once it has started lifting or peeling away from the substrate, painting it will not fix that and we would rather say so than take the job. If yours is not a good candidate, we will tell you at the estimate rather than after the deposit.

Yes. Vanities, laundry cabinetry, built in shelving, media units and mudroom storage all go through the same process as a kitchen. Vanities in particular are worth doing at the same time as a kitchen, because the booth is already on site and it costs considerably less than booking it as a separate job later. If you have several rooms in mind, mention it at the estimate and we will price it as one scope.
