More Than a Coat of Paint
Stain work is the least forgiving finish we offer. There is no film to hide behind: every missed sanding scratch, every lap mark and every uneven coat shows through the grain. That is why refinishing is a sanding job first and a coating job second. We strip or scuff back to sound wood, raise and match the grain, and build the colour in thin controlled coats so the timber still reads as timber. Coastal weather makes this a maintenance item rather than a one-time job — south-facing doors and exposed railings in South Surrey and White Rock take direct UV and salt air, and a refinish on schedule costs a fraction of replacing the wood.
- 5-Year Warranty A typical painting warranty is 2 years. We stand beside our clients for an additional 3.
- Quality Workmanship Pressure washed, fully prepped and finished with 2 coats of quality paint — guaranteed. We don't cut corners.
- Fully Insured $5,000,000 liability insurance and workman's coverage through WorkSafeBC. We've got you covered.

What Stain Refinishing Includes
Exterior Doors & Sidelights
The most common call we get. A south or west-facing front door loses its topcoat in three to five years on the coast, and once UV reaches the stain the wood greys underneath. We take the slab off its hinges where we can, sand back to clean wood, match the existing tone on an offcut before committing, and build three coats of marine-grade exterior finish. Weatherstripping and hardware come off rather than getting taped around.
Railings, Beams & Timber Detail
Exposed post-and-beam, pergolas, and glass-panel railing frames — the details that date a house fastest when the finish fails. These are almost entirely prep: sanding profiles and inside corners by hand, cleaning out checked grain, and spot-priming any bare end grain, which drinks finish and blotches if it goes on dry. We coat vertical surfaces last so overspray and drips land on already-sanded wood.
Decks & Fences
Deck refinishing lives or dies on moisture content. We test before we coat — stain applied to damp cedar or pressure-treated fir will cloud and peel within a season no matter how good the product is. Old solid stain gets stripped or ground back; semi-transparent gets cleaned and brightened. We are direct about which decks are past refinishing and should be replaced instead of coated.
Interior Trim, Stairs & Built-Ins
Stained baseboards, casings, stair treads and handrails, and site-built cabinetry and shelving. Interior stain work means dust control above all else: sanded bare wood picks up every airborne particle, so we seal the room, run negative-air where the layout allows, and coat in the same visit as the final sand rather than leaving raw wood overnight.
Colour Matching & Sample Boards
Stain colour cannot be judged from a fan deck — the same tint reads completely differently on fir, oak, maple and cedar. We prepare sample boards on offcuts of your actual wood, in your actual light, and get your sign-off before a single coat goes on the real surface. Where we are refinishing part of a matched set, we match to the existing pieces rather than to a swatch.

Stain Refinishing Questions
Almost always — but on a sample board of your own wood first, never straight onto the surface. The same stain looks different on fir than on oak, so we bring you a physical match to approve before we commit. Where an exact match is not achievable we tell you before starting, not after.
UV and salt air. A south or west-facing door on the coast typically needs a maintenance coat every three to five years, and the trade-off is real: a scuff-and-recoat while the finish is still intact is a fraction of the cost of a full strip once the wood has greyed. We will tell you which one yours needs.
Only after the old coating comes off, which is a strip or a grind rather than a sand. Semi-transparent stain will not penetrate through paint film, so anything left behind shows as a blotch. Sometimes the honest answer is a solid-colour stain instead — it covers what a semi-transparent cannot.
Not for exterior stain. We test moisture content and hold to an 18% ceiling, and most coastal exterior finishes need surface temperatures above 10°C to cure properly. Interior stain work runs year round. We would rather reschedule than put a coat on wood that will cloud.
